I Miss J Dilla…

Recently I started a play through of all 1500 songs on my MP3 player in order to revisit some old favs and delete some shit I didn’t even know was on it.  One of many artists that stood out in its personal timelessness is J Dilla.  As an ex hip hop fan and having worked in the Mix Tape/DJ retail business for two years, I’ve heard about everything there was to listen to.  I currently have very little hip hop left in my MP3 player due to its lack of actual instruments and redundant themes.  The Big Ls, Tupacs, and Biggies left a void in the genre that can never and will never be filled in my opinion.

Dilla however stands out as a musical super talent even with my own super critical view of hip hop.  Sadly he died prematurely but his body of work is amazing nonetheless.  Even though he’s gone, I smile and turn up the volume whenever he randomly pops on my playlist.  That’s about the best legacy anyone could ask for.

Air Jordan IV White/Cement vol. 2012

I’ve been going back and forth on these for the past two months and still haven’t made up my mind. Obviously, there is a lot of concern surrounding the price tag. The 1999 version of this sneaker retailed at $100.00. Fast forward about 13 years. Nike now plans to throw these on shelves as of February 18th and demand $160.00 per pair. Is inflation that much of a bitch? $160.00 for a sneaker with 1989 technology is asking a little much, no?

Secondly are the minor (major in my eyes) detail adjustments. As most people know, long gone are the days of the heralded “Nike Air” logo on the back of earlier Jordan retros. We’re now overwhelmed with jumpmen on the back of our favorite late 80’s-early 90’s J’s. I suppose I can live with the jumpman on the heel tab of the III, V, and VI. But for some reason it just doesn’t look right on the heel of any IV. Maybe it’s too bulky. Or it could be it suffers from the lack of the Air under it. I don’t know. All I do know is that it never belonged on the IV (or most other Jordans for that matter). 80’s babies agree with me.

Another obvious difference between the 1999 vs. 2012 is the shade of gray. The 2012 has more of a true cement color, which makes sense considering the name of the colorway. The 1999 had a “tech” gray which was on the lighter side. If I had to choose, I’d again have stick to the ’99 tech gray. My hope is that the above image and all other pre-release images are not how the final product will turn out. Wishful thinking I guess. These will be a game-time decision for me.

This will probably be one of the only pairs of kicks I cop all year if I decide to pull the trigger. I can’t handle the pace that Jordan Brand has been dictating for the past few years, releasing sneakers damn near every month for upwards of $160-200. The problem is the cycle will continue because Nike is making bank off these kids don’t hold back at all. I blame hip-hop 😛

Check out this gnarly dirt jump bail

I never knew BMX’ers could get the speed wobbles. This chick proved me wrong. Good thing all her friends were so concerned. Oh wait…

Go Pro HD and UFC & Professional Sporting events…

Advances in wearable HD videography have really raised the bar on extreme sports and how they can be watched and filmed. No more 3rd-person-only shots now that you go POV and strap a Go Pro or ContourHD camera on your helmet, handlebars, chest, wrist, surfboard, kayak, etc…  My personal favorite use of these is definitely backcountry and big mountain snowboarding and also kayaking.  If you’ve ever been waist deep in powder your likely also a fan of these vids.  I’m actually considering getting one of these this winter for some trips of my own; they both offer a myriad of accessories and they take some great photos.  Plus crazy shit can happen at any time and getting it on film might be pretty awesome.

What I’m really interested in however is applying this technology to UFC and other MMA venues.  An upfront view of highlight knock out replays would really be stepping it up from ringside cameras.  Can you imagine seeing Anthony Petis’ ninja kick from Herb Dean’s vantage from inside the Octagon?  Also after the fact, this would be a great way to judge the actually referee’s performances as their decisions would be closely scrutinized and I believe this could lead to much better reffing.  Obviously the main draw back is fighter’s safety, you can’t be jumping on an unconscious fighter and smashing them in the face with the camera strapped to your chest… But as the technology gets better and smaller, I guarantee you will see this type of footage coming to live events, maybe even sports like football, hockey, or baseball where the camera could be integrated into the actual helmet design.  Now that’s a reason to stare at the jumbotron!

What’s your favorite use of these cameras?  What do you think about UFC and Pro sports using them?

another Hopkins/Pascal gem…

These two know how to sell a fight. Or maybe it’s legit hatred for one another. Can’t say I blame Hop. That French-Canadian accent coming from a dude named Jean would trigger me too. Glad i don’t have to shell out $54.99 for the fight, because I probably would have. This baby will be an HBO freebee.

Fedor Emelianenko vs. Dan Henderson…

Fedor Emelianenko

Fedor Emelianenko

Currently this fight is having its contract worked out by Strikeforce and M1 to take place in July at an unconfirmed weight class.  As a Pride fan, I love this matchup.  Both fighters throw haymakers that could kill a man and both are equipped for a ground battle should it come down to it.  No BJJ in this match, should be pure standup.

That being said, there’s a lot of talk about Fedor retiring after his last two fights which he lost by a Triangle to Verdum and a TKO by Antonio Silva.  Lately I’ve been trolling some threads where basically everyone has been discrediting Fedor and dismissing him as washed up and over rated.  I’m not sure where these people get off calling the greatest heavyweight in MMA history “over rated” but its kind of a knock on ignorant American fans that probably didn’t even follow Pride at any point or see any of his fights.  Its easy to erroneously state he fought no name guys in Pride, but statistically, a lot of these kids running their mouths didn’t even watch Pride back then as they were still being weened off WWF and suckling the teet of TUF and UFC by Chuck Liddell and Ortiz vs Shamrock rematches.

A lot of arguments I read present valid points on both sides, but the Fedor haters are forgetting one thing: Read the rest of this entry »
