UFC 139 thoughts and predictions

Let me first say that I love this card. Absolutely stacked. So stacked that the UFC probably should have considered watering it down to put some of the big names towards their UFC on FOX failure. I say failure because I felt the debut was awful. I was reduced to watching the prelims on a crappy stream while the one hour time slot was basically a hype show followed by a single don’t blink your eyes or you’ll miss it heavyweight fight. I hope they handle it better in the future.

UFC 139 is loaded with former champions. Faber, Cung Le, Dan Henderson, and Shogun are all former title holders in either the UFC, Strikeforce, or WEC. Stylistically, they all fight to please the common MMA fan and are battling for title contention. Wanderlei is just the icing on the cake. Guaranteed to see some brutal striking in every main card bout. Should be an excellent card and will likely be worth the $44.99 PPV fee.

Henderson vs. Shogun

Great match up and a worthy main event. Overall, I haven’t been impressed by Shogun since his switch to the UFC. Although he has won some key fights to stay in the picture, his cardio remains his downfall in my eyes.  Hendo is getting older but he is still capable of pressing the action at an impressive pace. No way Shogun can keep up. Also keep in mind that Hendo has never been knocked out and has quite the chin. I like Dan Henerson winning via some type of stoppage.

Wanderlei vs. Cung Le
Wanderlei Silva is pretty much damaged goods at this point. As much as I respect the guy, he’s been knocked out in brutal fashion one too many times. He always comes prepared to slug, but it never appears that he has a gameplan. This entire fight will be fought on the feet and Cung Le is a more well rounded striker. He’ll emerge the victor in a fight that doesn’t last 3 rounds.

Faber vs. Bowles
Two top 5 bantamweights. Could very well win fight of the night honors. Faber is non-stop and Bowles will gladly exchange. I think it will ultimately come down to experience, and Faber has more. He knows how to win fights and will outpoint Bowles in a fight that does go the distance. Faber in 3.

UFC on Versus 4: Barry vs. Kongo predictions…

Rick Story and Anthony Johnson were originally scheduled to headline this card. Johnson had to pull out with an injury, so the UFC replaced him with Nate Marquardt. Now earlier today Marquardt had to pull out because he was not medically cleared to fight. Finally in comes Charlie Brenneman who will hopefully be last name thrown in the mix.

Rick Story must have some set of balls on him. He begins training camp with plans to fight Johnson. Then he has to switch it up and train for Marquadt instead. Now here we are less than 36 hours away from the bout and Dana throws in Charlie Brenneman. Not only that, Story is bumped of the main event. He must be pretty desperate for a payday because training for three different fighters in one camp is no easy task. I hope for Story’s sake that it doesn’t come back to bite him in the ass.

Go Pro HD and UFC & Professional Sporting events…

Advances in wearable HD videography have really raised the bar on extreme sports and how they can be watched and filmed. No more 3rd-person-only shots now that you go POV and strap a Go Pro or ContourHD camera on your helmet, handlebars, chest, wrist, surfboard, kayak, etc…  My personal favorite use of these is definitely backcountry and big mountain snowboarding and also kayaking.  If you’ve ever been waist deep in powder your likely also a fan of these vids.  I’m actually considering getting one of these this winter for some trips of my own; they both offer a myriad of accessories and they take some great photos.  Plus crazy shit can happen at any time and getting it on film might be pretty awesome.

What I’m really interested in however is applying this technology to UFC and other MMA venues.  An upfront view of highlight knock out replays would really be stepping it up from ringside cameras.  Can you imagine seeing Anthony Petis’ ninja kick from Herb Dean’s vantage from inside the Octagon?  Also after the fact, this would be a great way to judge the actually referee’s performances as their decisions would be closely scrutinized and I believe this could lead to much better reffing.  Obviously the main draw back is fighter’s safety, you can’t be jumping on an unconscious fighter and smashing them in the face with the camera strapped to your chest… But as the technology gets better and smaller, I guarantee you will see this type of footage coming to live events, maybe even sports like football, hockey, or baseball where the camera could be integrated into the actual helmet design.  Now that’s a reason to stare at the jumbotron!

What’s your favorite use of these cameras?  What do you think about UFC and Pro sports using them?

How to beat Anderson Silva…

I was just playing the new Mortal Kombat at my buddies place and Scorpion has a bad ass flying scissor.  I didn’t realize til a few minutes ago its the same move Anderson Silva lost to Chonan by paired with a bad ass heel hook.  If this is what it takes to beat the guy, I don’t think anyone is going to do it anytime soon. Kind of reminds me of Oleg Taktarov’s Rolling Knee Bar, my favorite old school UFC move besides the “Tank Abbott Turtle”.  I wonder if Chonan learned that move from Steven Segal? heh

UFC 130 thoughts and predictions

I’m a little disappointed that the UFC didn’t scramble to rejuvenate this card with a few nice filler bouts. Maynard vs. Edgar was scratched. Thiago Silva was rumored to fail a drug test and was bounced from facing Rampage. In addition, at least three more fighters had to withdraw due to injury. If I copped tickets to see this event in a few months ago I would be pissed right about now. The main card has the looks of a free Spike show.

Fedor Emelianenko vs. Dan Henderson…

Fedor Emelianenko

Fedor Emelianenko

Currently this fight is having its contract worked out by Strikeforce and M1 to take place in July at an unconfirmed weight class.  As a Pride fan, I love this matchup.  Both fighters throw haymakers that could kill a man and both are equipped for a ground battle should it come down to it.  No BJJ in this match, should be pure standup.

That being said, there’s a lot of talk about Fedor retiring after his last two fights which he lost by a Triangle to Verdum and a TKO by Antonio Silva.  Lately I’ve been trolling some threads where basically everyone has been discrediting Fedor and dismissing him as washed up and over rated.  I’m not sure where these people get off calling the greatest heavyweight in MMA history “over rated” but its kind of a knock on ignorant American fans that probably didn’t even follow Pride at any point or see any of his fights.  Its easy to erroneously state he fought no name guys in Pride, but statistically, a lot of these kids running their mouths didn’t even watch Pride back then as they were still being weened off WWF and suckling the teet of TUF and UFC by Chuck Liddell and Ortiz vs Shamrock rematches.

A lot of arguments I read present valid points on both sides, but the Fedor haters are forgetting one thing: Read the rest of this entry »

The face of robbery…

Yet another example of why the MMA needs to do away with the 10-point must system…
