HBO’s Tim Bradley vs. Ruslan Provodnikov is early fight of the year candidate…

provodnikov-bradley

This was one of those brutal (almost hard to watch) back and forth bouts where I’m now fearing each of the fighters will emerge in future contests as merely shells of their former selves. Just too much blunt force trauma to not have a lasting effect. In the early and late middle rounds, it had a Meldrick Taylor – Cesar Chavez likeness. Bradley was taking an absolute bludgeoning, but refusing to succumb. He impressed me not only in that he took the punishment he did and remained in the middle of the ring, but also having the gas left to respond. And respond violently he did. I understand making Rocky references in comparison to real prize fighting is a bit of a cliche. However, it would have been perfectly appropriate for Provodnikov to make his way  to the corner after the first couple of rounds and uttered the words “he is not human, he is like a piece of iron.” If you haven’t had a chance to check out the replay of this war, treat yourself.

Paul Williams returns to the ring for 1st time since being brutalized by Sergio Martinez…

I’m not gonna lie. When I saw Paul Williams hit the deck after Martinez caught him with that monster overhand left, I wasn’t sure he’d ever be the same. It brought me back to when Antonio Tarver basically ended Roy Jones’ career back in 2004. It’s not easy for a boxer to recover from such a devastating knockout. Especially someone like Williams. He makes his living off of fearlessly pressuring his opponents. Now he knows he’s vulnerable to the big shot. Makes me wonder if he finally took the time in camp to work on using his height and reach to his advantage defensively speaking. I hope so. It pains me to think that a fighter with all the physical assets in the world would want to continue slugging it out with fighters when he has the tools to meticulously pick them apart. Tomorrow night boxing fans will learn a lot about what the future holds for Paul Williams when he takes on the undefeated Erislandy Lara on HBO.

Wladimir Klitschko vs. David Haye

This is one of the more notable heavyweight clashes of recent years in a sport once dominated by the big guys. I just checked out the weigh in. Both fighters are shredded. Something your rarely find today. From what I’ve seen as of late, the majority of modern day heavies are cut older and flabbier than everyone below them in weight class. I am actually excited to tune into this one however. Haye has the more aggressive style and is someone that can actually give Klitschko some trouble for once. On the other side, Klitschko is content on throwing a lot of stiff jabs waiting for the perfect time to unleash the biggest right hand in the game. A lot of former pros have Haye getting to Klitschko and winning it either on points or via early KO. I couldn’t disagree more. Klitschko is too big and strong, close enough to his prime, and way too motivated to shut Haye’s mouth. Probably his hardest fight in 5+ years but I fully expect him to emerge as the victor.

Catch it on HBO 7/2/11 4:45 PM Live from Hamburg, Germany

Saul Alvarez aka ‘La Flama Roja’ fights on HBO tomorrow night…

Actually I made that nickname up. He’s really internationally knows as “Canelo.” But last time I checked cinnamon was brown. But he’s a redheaded Mexican. So his alias from this point on is La Flama Roja. You heard it here first. In all seriousness, Alvarez is a tough bastard. He fights like a bully and takes punishment as well as he gives it. Based on his looks and his fighting style, I’m pretty sure Micky Ward knocked up some Mexican puta and out popped this dude. He looks to improve his flawless 36-0 record tomorrow night on HBO. Tune in. He’s one of the most entertaining middleweights in boxing.

another Hopkins/Pascal gem…

These two know how to sell a fight. Or maybe it’s legit hatred for one another. Can’t say I blame Hop. That French-Canadian accent coming from a dude named Jean would trigger me too. Glad i don’t have to shell out $54.99 for the fight, because I probably would have. This baby will be an HBO freebee.

Reason #2977 Bernard Hopkins won’t lose to Jean Pascal

If being French Canadian wasn’t enough reason to detest this dude, Jean Pascal actually took it up a notch and publicly accused the legend of juicing. He must still be salty for letting the man 18 years his elder take him the distance in their first fight. Well now it’s looks like he’ll have to bear the consequences of giving one of boxing’s greatest strategists bulletain board material. Brilliant.

Cotto vs. Margarito lives up to hype…

All I can say is damn! I rank Saturday’s welterweight showdown between Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto as fight of the year easily and definately in my top 5 of best fights I’ve ever witnessed live. Tony Margarito is an absolute machine! Cotto landed clean, hard ass punches all night that didn’t phase Tony one bit. He just kept coming forward until the pressure finally got to Cotto.  To watch the full fight, use this link: http://www.justin.tv/sportinwood/174474/Miguel_Cotto_vs_Antonio_Margarito

Miguel Cotto vs. Antonio Margarito Link…

Tonight’s fight is being dubbed matchup of the decade by many. Two of the busiest and toughest fighters in boxing today. The Mexico-Puerto Rico rivalry helps a bit too. It would be a smart idea to check it out either tonight or next week when HBO replays it for free. I’ve also done plenty of searching for links and come up with a few leads. First check http://www.myp2p.eu/broadcast.php?matchid=15519&part=sports every hour or so as they update which online TV players (Sopcast, TVU, etc) are playing it and which channel to tune into. Also, I’ve been told that the following links will stream the fight live so check them out around fight time.

Joe Calzaghe vs. Roy Jones booked for September…

We all knew it was a matter of time before this fight was finalized. It was either Joe C taking on a past-his-prime Roy or a mega fight with middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik. Well Calzaghe’s promoter Frank Warren was leaning towards Pavlik for Calzaghe’s could be last fight before retirement. Calzaghe thought otherwise and fired his longtime promoter. The result is a September 20th Madison Square Garden fight for Jones and Calzaghe. Although the boxing community would have preferred a Pavlik-Calzaghe matchup, Jones still brings a lot to the table at 39 and will be no pushover for the undefeated Welshman especially considering his dominating performance over Tito Trinidad. Stay tuned for updates including training videos, press conferences, and so on.

Paul Williams gets revenge on Carlos Quintana in impressive fashion…

I’m a little late with this but I had to up the video of Paul Williams’ devastating 1st round knockout of Carlos Quintana on June 7th in Connecticut. I remember watching their first fight and telling myself something was horribly wrong with Williams. No way should a 6’2″ 147 lb’er with as much talent as the Punisher get dominated like he did. Well, apparently he worked out the kinks because it took him less than one round to get his redemption and beat the absolute shit out of Quintana. “South Carolina standup!” Haha.

Bernard Hopkins vs. Joe Calzaghe…

2 days until the fight the whole world has been waiting for. Wales native with a super work rate Joe Calzaghe faces the slick 43 year old Philadelphian Bernard Hopkins in Vegas this Saturday on regular HBO (Championship Boxing). It marks the first time Joe will cross the pond and fight on U.S. soil. Calzaghe wants to improve his record to an impressive 45-0 and prove the haters wrong who disregard European boxers. Hopkins, on the other hand, attempts to solidify his legend status by beating one of the best pound for pound fighters of the era. Check the links below for the countdown special that aired last weekend on HBO.

Miguel Cotto vs. Alfonso Gomez & Antonio Margarito vs. Kermit Cintron…

Nice little doubleheader of welterweight action tonight on HBO. First up is the much anticipated rematch between Antonio Margarito (35-5) and Kermit Cintron (29-1), two hard hitting latinos. Cintron’s corner threw in the towel during the first fight, leaving Cintron in tears. MMA fans may remember Cintron as being one of the boxers who challenged Dana White to a fight with one of his top fighters. It obviously never happened. In the main event, Alfonso Gomez takes on feared Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto in a fight I honestly don’t see going the distance. Gomez is known for his appearence on NBC’s contender, his most notable victory a KO over Arturo Gatti that ended Gatti’s career. With a win, Cotto will most likely face the winner of Margarito-Cintron, hopefully setting him up for Mayweather in early 2009.

The Wire shirt: Bubble’s Depot

p4277050dt.jpg

HBO seriously needs to consider making a deal with a good streetwear designer that could produce a decent line of clothing based on the Wire. There’s a lot of potential for some SICK designs. This particular tee isn’t a bad rough draft, especially considering it was done by HBO themselves. I’ve also seen some pretty good ones floating around Ebay, but after seeing hundreds of Scarface tees, there’s no doubt in my mind that a line of “The Wire” shirts would trump Tony Montana.
