Check out this gnarly dirt jump bail

I never knew BMX’ers could get the speed wobbles. This chick proved me wrong. Good thing all her friends were so concerned. Oh wait…

Go Pro HD and UFC & Professional Sporting events…

Advances in wearable HD videography have really raised the bar on extreme sports and how they can be watched and filmed. No more 3rd-person-only shots now that you go POV and strap a Go Pro or ContourHD camera on your helmet, handlebars, chest, wrist, surfboard, kayak, etc…  My personal favorite use of these is definitely backcountry and big mountain snowboarding and also kayaking.  If you’ve ever been waist deep in powder your likely also a fan of these vids.  I’m actually considering getting one of these this winter for some trips of my own; they both offer a myriad of accessories and they take some great photos.  Plus crazy shit can happen at any time and getting it on film might be pretty awesome.

What I’m really interested in however is applying this technology to UFC and other MMA venues.  An upfront view of highlight knock out replays would really be stepping it up from ringside cameras.  Can you imagine seeing Anthony Petis’ ninja kick from Herb Dean’s vantage from inside the Octagon?  Also after the fact, this would be a great way to judge the actually referee’s performances as their decisions would be closely scrutinized and I believe this could lead to much better reffing.  Obviously the main draw back is fighter’s safety, you can’t be jumping on an unconscious fighter and smashing them in the face with the camera strapped to your chest… But as the technology gets better and smaller, I guarantee you will see this type of footage coming to live events, maybe even sports like football, hockey, or baseball where the camera could be integrated into the actual helmet design.  Now that’s a reason to stare at the jumbotron!

What’s your favorite use of these cameras?  What do you think about UFC and Pro sports using them?

Street League Kansas City was a little ridiculous…

Just days after gassing up the Maloof Cup, I stumble upon Street League Skateboarding. 10 finalists. Tech section. Line section. Big section. 5-7 attempts on each section. Skaters’s tricks scored instantly based on 1-10 scale, thanks to Rob Dyrdek’s newish system as seen on Fantasy Factory. No timed runs. Brilliant! Never seen tricks of this caliber attempted in a contest, never mind stomped. The next stop airs on ESPN2 on July 17th at 5 PM ET. Something you probably should tune into. The contest runs more like a demo than a contest.

Maloof Money Cup 2011 and thoughts on skateboarding contests…

Street skateboarding contests have evolved dramatically over the course of about 5-10 years or so. Gone are the days when vert skaters could enter street contests, air crazily off of quarter pipes, land routine transfers (routine in the world of vert), grind some coping, and walk away with the win while all the street technicians were left in the dust. The new jam and/or best trick format in present day contests has filtered out nearly all of those wanna-be street skateboarders. The scoring system now allows for competitors to go all out and not be penalized for bails. What this amounts to is insane skateboarding. Something that you wouldn’t have seen in the 1998 X-Games. Combine these factors with a handful of the best skateboarders competing for a 1st place purse of $160K. The anti was consistently being upped throughout the course of this particular contest.
