UFC 139 thoughts and predictions

Let me first say that I love this card. Absolutely stacked. So stacked that the UFC probably should have considered watering it down to put some of the big names towards their UFC on FOX failure. I say failure because I felt the debut was awful. I was reduced to watching the prelims on a crappy stream while the one hour time slot was basically a hype show followed by a single don’t blink your eyes or you’ll miss it heavyweight fight. I hope they handle it better in the future.

UFC 139 is loaded with former champions. Faber, Cung Le, Dan Henderson, and Shogun are all former title holders in either the UFC, Strikeforce, or WEC. Stylistically, they all fight to please the common MMA fan and are battling for title contention. Wanderlei is just the icing on the cake. Guaranteed to see some brutal striking in every main card bout. Should be an excellent card and will likely be worth the $44.99 PPV fee.

Henderson vs. Shogun

Great match up and a worthy main event. Overall, I haven’t been impressed by Shogun since his switch to the UFC. Although he has won some key fights to stay in the picture, his cardio remains his downfall in my eyes.  Hendo is getting older but he is still capable of pressing the action at an impressive pace. No way Shogun can keep up. Also keep in mind that Hendo has never been knocked out and has quite the chin. I like Dan Henerson winning via some type of stoppage.

Wanderlei vs. Cung Le
Wanderlei Silva is pretty much damaged goods at this point. As much as I respect the guy, he’s been knocked out in brutal fashion one too many times. He always comes prepared to slug, but it never appears that he has a gameplan. This entire fight will be fought on the feet and Cung Le is a more well rounded striker. He’ll emerge the victor in a fight that doesn’t last 3 rounds.

Faber vs. Bowles
Two top 5 bantamweights. Could very well win fight of the night honors. Faber is non-stop and Bowles will gladly exchange. I think it will ultimately come down to experience, and Faber has more. He knows how to win fights and will outpoint Bowles in a fight that does go the distance. Faber in 3.

Henderson stops Fedor in 1st via TKO

Third straight loss for the former heavyweight king. At first glace I thought Herb Dean jumped the gun. After re-watching the slow mo replays it actually does appear that Hendo puts Fedor to sleep with the uppercut he lands upon taking Fedor’s back. The pummeling to the back of Fedor’s grounded head actually may have brought him back to consciousness. Tough call to make. You want to see fighters of this caliber given the benefit of the doubt. At the same time, no need for unnecessary punishment. Henderson throws bombs.

Fedor Emelianenko vs. Dan Henderson…

Fedor Emelianenko

Fedor Emelianenko

Currently this fight is having its contract worked out by Strikeforce and M1 to take place in July at an unconfirmed weight class.  As a Pride fan, I love this matchup.  Both fighters throw haymakers that could kill a man and both are equipped for a ground battle should it come down to it.  No BJJ in this match, should be pure standup.

That being said, there’s a lot of talk about Fedor retiring after his last two fights which he lost by a Triangle to Verdum and a TKO by Antonio Silva.  Lately I’ve been trolling some threads where basically everyone has been discrediting Fedor and dismissing him as washed up and over rated.  I’m not sure where these people get off calling the greatest heavyweight in MMA history “over rated” but its kind of a knock on ignorant American fans that probably didn’t even follow Pride at any point or see any of his fights.  Its easy to erroneously state he fought no name guys in Pride, but statistically, a lot of these kids running their mouths didn’t even watch Pride back then as they were still being weened off WWF and suckling the teet of TUF and UFC by Chuck Liddell and Ortiz vs Shamrock rematches.

A lot of arguments I read present valid points on both sides, but the Fedor haters are forgetting one thing: Read the rest of this entry »

UFC 82 Henderson vs. Silva…

i.jpg

Tonight’s card looks pretty decent. Nothing compared to next month’s Fight Night (featuring a lot of huge names), but I’m going to tune in tonight so I figured I’d drop my picks. UFC 82 also marks the return of two past stars and fan favorites: Adrei Arlovski & Evan Tanner. Andrei isn’t even on the main card. As usual, my picks are bolded and click on the pic for a bar list.

Chris Wilson vs. Jon Fitch
Yushin Okami vs. Evan Tanner
Alessio Sakara vs. Chris Leben
Heath Herring vs. Cheick Kongo
Dan Henderson vs. Anderson Silva

Zab Judah and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson square off. But not like you think…the two briefly discuss the tired topic of boxing versus MMA. It’s nice to finally see two great fighters sit down and shoot the shit with no hard feelings regarding the debate between the two sports. Click here to checkout the video. Both Zab and Rampage are set for their next bouts taking place next week. Zab begins his comeback trail Friday September 7th on ESPN Friday Night Fights, while Rampage makes his first title defense against Dan Henderson September 8th at UFC 75.

Wanderlei Silva, Knocked The F*ck Out!

Wanderlei “The Ax Murderer” Silva got “KTFO” in a 3rd Round battle last night against Dan Henderson for the PRIDE Middleweight Championship, becoming the first person in MMA history to simultaneously possess two belts in two weight divisions.  Henderson rocked him with a spinning backfist…  The announcer called it “a finish worthy of Chuck Norris”…   Also Nick Diaz submitted Takanori Gomi in a phenomal battle and Frank Trigg posted a win.
