2012 in review

The stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

4,329 films were submitted to the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. This blog had 48,000 views in 2012. If each view were a film, this blog would power 11 Film Festivals

$100 for a pair of Camo Cargos?

I’ve been hunting for a high quality pair of military cargos for the past week or so (Old Navy durability isn’t exactly reputable). Took my search to eBay and ended up finding some pretty obnoxious prices. For freakin’ cargo shorts! People are rolling this one particular brand out for $85-100 accompanied by a collage of Lil Wayne images rocking the same pair to boost their street cred. Nothing special about them however. Simply a standard pair of Marc Jacobs cargo shorts that retailed for around fifty bucks on their website. That was before the resellers caught wind of Weezy wearing them and decided to cash in, using the all too familiar “hypebeast” factor.

You figure now a days your average teen sees a pic of his favorite pop rapper donning a pair of anything and he immediately wants in. Resellers take this into consideration and view it as a great opportunity. They promptly purchase as many units of product ‘x’ they’re able to until they are OOS everywhere.  Now they can dictate the market and become capable of flipping them for double or triple the price they paid. That’s exactly how resellers work. They prey on the beasts. They do it with sneakers and they do it with apparel. Well I hope I’m not too late in exposing them in regards to this specific item. Did a bit of research and am now 100% certain these $100 Marc Jacobs shorts being sold on the ‘Bay are nothing more than a pair of $30.00 Rothco Infantry shorts with some unnecessary MJ tags slapped on them. So even if you’re a self-proclaimed hypebeast or simply like the “camo dress” look Wayne is sporting, don’t waste your hundo on the Jacobs. Snag a pair of the exact same shorts without the Marc Jacobs logo for nearly 1/3 of the price HERE. Every size available.

THE WALKING DEAD – Season Two Premiere Analysis: The Fuck Up List…

I wasn’t disappointed enough with Season 1 to write a review COUGH… scathing analysis. However after three minutes of the Season 2 Premiere I quickly changed my mind.

The Season starts off with a recap of how awful the 1st season was which I brought back fond memories of wasting hours of my life hoping the actors would suddenly learn how to act.

Then it kicks in with the main character Rick Grimes talking about his feelings over a walkie talkie to someone from the first or second episode thats been dead for weeks. It quickly moves to their caravan of survivors rolling out of ATL to Fort Bennett. They quickly become stuck on the highway due to overturned cars and gridlocked traffic. Oh and then their 30 year old RV surprisingly breaks down…

FUCK UP #1 – In the Zombie Apocalypse, invest in new whips and equipment and by INVEST I mean STEAL something new that isn’t 30 FUCKING YEARS OLD. Nobody gives a shit what you steal; EVERYONE IS FUCKING DEAD.

As the kids wander off in a sea of cars and they all meander away solo to reluctantly scavenge supplies, an old man on a roof keeping watch doesn’t see a pack of zombies walk up behind him from the direction they just came 10 minutes ago (somehow driving right past a pack of 200 zombies?). Finally, they notice they have company. They are 50 yards away… Officer Rick Grimes stands among the cars with his sniper rifle breaking all rules of having a fuckin sniper rifle in your hands.

FUCK UP #2 – Put someone with a SNIPER RIFLE and better vision than a 70 year old on fucking roof for look out detail.

Abercrombie & Fitch are some hypocrites with this whole Mike “Situation” Sorrentino publicity stunt

NEW YORK (AP) – The Situation doesn’t usually require a lot of motivation to lose the shirt. But Abercrombie & Fitch wants him to go one further – the company has offered to pay “Jersey Shore” cast members to stop wearing clothes carrying their brand.

The preppy teen retailer said Tuesday it would pay a “substantial payment” to Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino or any cast member who stops wearing its clothing on the popular MTV reality show because the series is “contrary to the aspirational nature of the brand.”

“We are deeply concerned that Mr. Sorrentino’s association with our brand could cause significant damage to our image,” the retailer said in a press release.

These idiots should have checked their past t-shirt lines before dropping this nonsense on the Situation. They think this dude will damage their image? I’m thinking these A&F corporate fags have never walked into one of their own store fronts or taken a look around at who wears their $70.00 cargo shorts. Damaged is something their image is well past.

Black Mass: the True Story of an unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob review

I read Black Mass a few years back. Probably around the time the Departed hit the big screen. Frank Costello was supposedly loosely based on real life Irish hood James “Whitey” Bulger. This gave me the urge to do a little more research into Whitey’s background and day to day criminal activities. A friend recommended this particular book, which chronicles Whitey’s life from childhood up to the moment he went on the lam, with tons of “great” true crime stuff in between. It also tells the story of the twisted relationship he had with childhood acquaintance and eventual FBI agent John Connolly, and how they single-handedly destroyed all credibility the Feds had during the time the two were in cahoots. Honestly, this book has everything true crime heads love. Conspiracy, violence, drugs, corruption, money, and the mob. I can’t really call it a first hand account because it was written by two Boston Globe reporters. But you do get the impression that information Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill is not exaggerated.

If you plan on following Whitey Bulger’s trial, this would probably a perfect foundation if you only have basic knowledge of the case. New England heads will especially appreciate it.

“The Art of War” – BBC Radio Documentary…

Sun Tzu "The Art of War"

In general, I constantly crave interesting shit.  I used to be obsessed with these BBC documentaries and I just revisited them and found this one.  It basically compares Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War” philosophies with some modern day examples.  Mainly the IRA, The Gulf War and the Iraq War.  A copy was found in Osama Bin Laden’s cave.  I’ve personally never read it, opting instead for Robert Greene’s “The 33 Strategies of War” shortly after reading his “48 Laws of Power” which is one of my favorite books of all time.  I’ll review that sometime.

Anyways found this interesting enough to share.  It gives a glimpse of how poorly the US Government and Military is in heeding universal wisdom that is thousands of years old.  (cough political agendas cough cough)  Also gives a example of the IRA at how they successfully used these priciples for guerrilla warfare.

My favorite part was the following quote: Click it to here the documentary.

‘A government should not mobilize an army out of anger, military leaders should not provoke war out of wrath. Act when it is beneficial, desist if it is not. Anger can revert to joy, wrath can revert to delight, but a nation destroyed cannot be restored to existence, and the dead cannot be restored to life.’ – Sun tzu

North American Union? WTF?!?

This is outside of the general MMA, Sports, Streetwear format that I tend to abide by, but when I made Bigsteez I made it as an open format blog.  That being said I couldn’t ignore this rather disturbing video sent by Manny.  I guess it wasn’t too surprising but its still rather sad and morally shocking.  I’m starting to think Obama is gonna get assasinated if he gets elected cuz I don’t think he would be feeling this North American Union bullshit.  I know I’m not feeling it.  If you can, send this video to your friends.

Peter Jackson to produce “The Hobbit”…

Peter Jackson

The Lord of The Rings Trilogy prequel is to be executive produced by Jackson who directed the trilogy.  The fantasy blockbuster smash grossed nearly 3 billion worldwide so “The Hobbit” will be an easy Billion or so lay up.  Filming is slated for 2009 for a two part prequel… one to be released in 2010 and the other in 2011.  I read the Hobbit in 6th grade and its still one of my favorite stories.  Definitely should live up to if not exceed the trilogy.

“I Am Legend” by Richard Matheson…

Robert Matheson’s “I Am Legend”

With the movie dropping tomorrow, I thought I drop a post about the origin of the story, Richard Matheson’s novel I Am Legend – published in 1954.  I’ve been amped up to see this movie for multiple reasons; I love vampire/zombie movies, I love New York City, and I love end of the world scenarios as well as different authors and directors take on all of the above.  Apparently its a riveting read and I intend to grab a copy ASAP.  Also researching this I learned that this book has had two film adaptations, I Am The Last Man On Earth as well as The Omega Man starring Charlton Heston.  From the hype it looks like both the movie and the book deliver so check’em out.

“Think & Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill…

Think And Grow Rich

This book is a must have for anyone tryna stack big money.  Its sold 30 million copies worldwide so you know its an official piece of literature.  Published in 1937 by Napoleon Hill after a thorough study of extremely wealthy people, namely Andrew Carnegie, this book outlines thirteen Principles for Success.  I read it years ago but just dipped back into it as I’ve been playing around with “Autosuggestion” and “The Subconcious Mind” principles.  Put this on your Chirstmas list. Now.

Nelson George’s “Hip Hop America”…

If you think you know alot about hip hop, you need to read this book because if you haven’t, truth is you probably don’t.  I read this a few years back but I’m due for a reread cuz its really that good.  Rolling Stone called George, “The most insightful hip hop writer on the planet” and I would have to agree.  Here’s a brief overview.

Nelson George offers an insider’s tour through a multimedia phenomenon of which rap music is only the audible manifestation, and also includes drugs, fashion, incarceration, basketball, entrepreneurship, technology, and language. Examining hip hop as music, a style, a business, a myth, and a moral code, he turns hip hop over to look at the ways it has been treated by Hollywood, Madison Avenue, and Wall Street to reach not just young black consumers but all young people.
