MMA’s First Death… Sam Vasquez R.I.P…

03 Dec

RIP Sam Vasquez 1972-2007

For a long time, promoters, fighters, and people like Dana White have hailed that MMA was a safer sport than boxing and I believe they are right.  With considerably fewer head jarring power shots and much shorter fights, MMA fighters like Chuck Liddell have vouched for MMA being considerably safer in a long term sense.
However MMA has just suffered its first casualty in a regulated US match.  Sam Vasquez, 35, died from complications after being injured from a KO in a Texas bout with Vince Libardi.  Knocked out by a flurry of punches to the chin, Vasquez suffered an acute clot in his brain and later a stroke.  People have died playing almost every sport imaginable and with MMA being so huge I think it was only a matter of time until MMA lost a warrior.  As a fan of the fight game, I send out my prayers to his family.

    This is sad news.
Although these things can and will happen, we can continue to improve safety.

Although this is from strikes, the goal of the MMA Conditioning Association is to improve a fighter’s ability to take a punch, recover from injury and have a longer, more injury-free career.
